In the World Cup matches, there are valuable points to collect, which is the only way for a team to move on to the big play-off. On our page with World Cup tables, you can see the position the teams hold, which is also updated when new match results are presented. Winning a FIFA World Cup match gives the team three points, while both teams get one point each in case of a draw. A team can get nine points at most during the group game.
To advance to the play-off a team needs to be one of the best two teams in their group. The teams ending up in third and fourth place will however have to leave the tournament. To reach one of the top positions it is usually necessary to score points from at least two of the matches played.
⚽ Extra time and penalty shoot-outs during the FIFA World Cup
The matches in the World Cup group game can be rounded off with a draw and as mentioned the points are then divided between the teams. When it is time for the play-off this principle is not useful, however, as one team has to win each match. This is done with a period of extra time which is played shortly after the regular time is over.
The extra time consists of two periods of 15 minutes each, where the goals scored will be added to the goals from the regular 90 minutes of the match. In soccer, the extra time is played to completion whether a team scores or not. If the result after the extra time is still a draw then the teams will go on to a penalty shoot-out.
In the penalty shoot-out, both teams get five shots each, and the team with the most scores wins. The teams will take turns shooting their penalties and if one of the teams takes a lead that can not be reached by the opponent then the penalty shoot-out will be finished earlier. If both teams score the same amount of goals instead then the shoot-out will continue with one try for each team until a winner can be declared.
The end result of a match taken to extra time will be the number of goals scored during regular time plus the goals scored during extra time. When a match goes to penalties it is however only the winning penalty that will be counted among the goals from the earlier 120 minutes.
